Microwave spectroscopy of electron solid and stripe phases in higher Landau levels

چکیده
Our recent broadband microwave and RF spectroscopic measurements of two-dimensional electron systems at Landau level filling n\1 are reviewed. Resonances in the spectrum of diagonal conductivity in many discrete regions of n allow us to identify and study the pinned electron solids. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Quantum Phases in Partially Filled Landau Levels
We compare the energies of different electron solids, such as bubble crystals with triangular and square symmetry and stripe phases, to those of correlated quantum liquids in partially filled intermediate Landau levels. Multiple transitions between these phases when varying the filling of the top-most partially filled Landau level explain the observed reentrance of the integer quantum Hall effe...

We present a brief survey of the charge density wave phases of a twodimensional electron liquid in moderate to weak magnetic fields where several higher Landau levels are occupied. The review follows the chronological development of this new and emerging field: from the ideas that led to the original theoretical prediction of the novel ground states, to their dramatic experimental discovery, to...

Charge density waves are thought to be common in two-dimensional electron systems in quantizing magnetic ,elds. Such phases are formed by the quasiparticles of the topmost occupied Landau level when it is partially ,lled. One class of charge density wave phases can be described as electron solids. In weak magnetic ,elds (at high Landau levels) solids with many particles per unit cell—bubble pha...
متن کاملObservation of pinning mode of stripe phases of 2D systems in high Landau levels.
We study the radio-frequency diagonal conductivities of the anisotropic stripe phases of higher Landau levels near half-integer fillings. In the hard direction, in which larger dc resistivity occurs, the spectrum exhibits a striking resonance, while in the orthogonal, easy direction, no resonance is discernible. The resonance is interpreted as a pinning mode of the stripe phase.

Two-dimensional (2D) electron materials such as semiconductor quantum wells and graphene form exotic phases when placed in a strong magnetic field and cooled down to low temperatures. The energy spectrum of such systems consists of macroscopically degenerate energy levels (Landau levels) that lead to the rich physics of integral and fractional quantum Hall effects (IQHE and FQHE). Different sta...
